Scrapbooks of notices and reviews of books written or edited by Higginson. The bulk of the material is clippings from newspapers and magazines, but there are also a few manuscript letters. The volumes covered are: Malbone: An Oldport Romance (1869), Army Life in a Black Regiment (1870), Atlantic Essays (1871), Brief Biographies (1875), A Book of American Explorers (1877), and Short Studies of American Authors (1880). One volume contains newspaper criticism of Higginson's magazine articles.

Higginson was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on December 22, 1823. He was a descendant of Francis Higginson, a Puritan minister and immigrant to the colony of Massachusetts Bay. His father, Stephen Higginson (born in Salem, Massachusetts, November 20, 1770; died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, February 20, 1834), was a merchant and philanthropist in Boston and steward of Harvard University from 1818 until 1834.
